How Do You Lycett? reveals all about Joe's scheming, and comes stuffed with jokes, paintings, potty-mouthed gardening updates and much more.

Capital Gains

Capital Gains

Thursday 17th November 2022. Audio Download

Julius Hutch (Peter Jones) has planned to spend his retirement years 'pottering' and worrying about his bills, but wakes one morning to discover a foreign merchant bank has put four million pounds into his account - and won't take it back. So Julius, a humble man, sets out to spend the money helping other people, and wooing Pauline, the local bank teller. Up against an enormous banking corporation and an unsavoury property developer, Julius soon discovers that rather than being crushed by these financial giants as he would have been in the past, he is rendered rather more delightfully impervious by his new-found wealth.

A comedy about family, late-in-life romance, environmentalism and justice against faceless conglomerates, Capital Gains is written in letters, speeches and emails between friends, lovers and enemies. Perhaps the little man may just triumph at last...

Dr. Willoughby

Dr. Willoughby

From 1999, this is a curious example of a meta-comedy: set within the world of television itself, it follows the egotistical star of a fictional ITV daytime medical soap. Joanna Lumley plays actress Donna Sinclair - Dr Willoughby herself - with a supporting cast including Brian Protheroe and Isobel Middleton. The sitcom ran for a single series (on ITV for real), and is a fascinating (if not always quite laugh-out-loud funny) slice of the TV comedy landscape of almost 25 years ago, still attempting to appeal to a broad spectrum of viewers but also push boundaries of style and format.
