The Liver BirdsWe couldn't not mention The Liver Birds today, the anniversary of its premiere broadcast. Debuting as a Comedy Playhouse pilot on this night in 1969, it would become not just a mainstream sitcom smash hit - running for nine series across the following decade, and a 1990s revival run - but also marks a landmark for women in comedy. Both behind the camera (in the form of creators Carla Lane and Myra Taylor) and in front, the comedy broke boundaries in the depiction of women (normal, working class women at that) on television, their love lives and other concerns they faced during a period of social upheaval in Britain. This is the sitcom that forged a path directly followable to Smack The Pony, Fleabag and many more - and it remains very funny today. |
